Numeration of Measure Numbers is Strange

Post by ThomasCat » Tue Aug 30, 2011 12:36 pm

Measure numbers start on the second measure and are numerated only every 4 measures after that. For example 2, 6, 10, 14, etc. Is this a bug, a corruption in my computer, or by design? And if by design, why such a series? Why not 1, 5, 9, etc. or better yet 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.?

Measure numbers are on the first bar line of each staff/brace so each staff has a measure number that's easy to find by scanning down the page. If you don't need measure numbers, you can turn them off with staff/brace "Setup/Draw" menu option. The "Features/Staves and Braces" section of the help file has more information.

That would be nice, but ... they sure aren't. Please see attachment. The program numerates the second measure of each staff.

Thanks for posting the image. It shows the measure numbers on the first bar line which precedes the second measure. More measure number options are planned for future versions, but for now your only choice is "on" or "off".

It looks like you're using an old version. V2.10.10 is available for download.

Now I see what's going on. The program counts the bar lines which of course doesn't count the measures. There is though an exception and that is if you numerate the first bar line as "2" then yes the measure numbers and the bar line numbers synchronize. But that's the only numeration that will do that. Normally sheet music is numerated starting with the first measure. I suspect the programmer simply wanted to save some programming complexity.

Anyways nice to know that it's not a bug but by design.

Thank you very much for your time and for the clarification.

Questions are also interpreted as requests. A future version will have additional options.
